Hilaro Barlow (1906 - 1944)
Cousin of Richard Burbury. A pre-war career Army Officer, Hilaro never lived in East Bergholt – he is commemorated on the War Memorial because his parents lived in the village. Hilaro was transferred to the Airborne Forces in 1942 and was killed in action during the Battle of Arnhem. At the time of his death he was the Deputy Commander of the 1st Airlanding Brigade.

In order to try and tell the story of Hilaro’s life as fully as possible, a request has been submitted to the Ministry of Defence for a copy of his Service Record.
Due to the exceptionally high volume of requests that the Ministry are currently receiving, it looks as if it will be the end of this year (or later) before a copy of the document is released.
It is hoped to include Hilaro’s story here, at some point during 2025. In the meantime, if you would like further information about Hilaro’s life then please feel free to get in touch.
