Details
Typically Constable is thought of as an oil painter. What is less well known is that he painted a number of fantastic watercolour landscapes in this period of 1802-1808, and this is one of just eight we can identify locally.
Although the artist sketched St Mary’s Church on numerous occasions over the years, this is certainly the only one of a view looking out of the south archway of the ruined tower.
Inscribed in the artist’s hand in pen and dark brown ink.
