Details
Suffolk countryside and natural landscapes is how Constable is best known. Here he chooses horses to pull a barge from the dry dock, giving the sense of drama to the piece. On the reverse of the canvas is a separate study of ‘Cows’
Many of these small oil sketches like this one were painted out of doors, and some of these would have been intended to use as studies for larger paintings.
