Details

Reputed chapel site visible as cropmark at TM 078 334 (S1). Mrs Walker gives location as TM 0784 3353, NE corner of field. Says AP (lost) showed distinct rectangular building at this location. Field named ‘Church Field’ adjoining Glebe Field and very close to old parsonage on 1731 map of parish (in SRO Ipswich). Also said to be lead coffins dug up by farmer (Mr John Willett’s father) in war (2nd WW?). Long standing local belief in church at Flatford – see (S3)(S2). Nothing shows on 1971, 1986 or 1996 SCC APs (S4). Also ‘font’ from this field – examined and identified as Post Medieval mortar (S5). November 1999: site inspection by Robert Carr recognised septaria spreads and some roof tile, but concluded not to be site of a church/chapel. Suggests evidence limited to field name only which is likely to relate merely to former ownership (S5). Formerly recorded as EBG MISC
