Chest tomb. Early C19. Commemorates Golding Constable (d 1816) and his wife Ann (d 1815). Ashlar. On low splayed plinth with shallow pedimented cover bearing inscriptions to Golding and Ann.

34. Twinning
East Bergholt ‘twinned’ with Barbizon, France.

East Bergholt is twinned with Barbizon in France, a commune town in the Seine-et-Marne in north-central France, located near the Fontainebleau Forest, its twinning agreement, signed over 40 years ago and was the driving force of Lady Anne Wake-Walker who was a guiding light of the twinning agreement for almost all of that time, as she had lived in Paris and spoke fluent French.

Constable’s landscapes capture specific locations of the English counties where he lived and worked.

Arthur lived in Bridge Cottage at Flatford and worked as a Miller’s Carter, before he joined the Army.  He served in the Royal Naval Division on the Western Front and was killed during the Battle of Arras, leaving a wife and young son.

Painted in 1814 "The Stour Valley and Dedham Village" was recently discovered. The painting depicts Langham church, Dedham church, Fen Bridge and the bend in the River Stour – all of which sit in the Dedham Vale, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that is largely cared for by the National Trust.

Range of cottages. Rectory Hill and St Marys Cottage probably C16 with later alterations and additions. Nos 1 and 2 probably early C19 replacing earlier structure. Timber-framed, rendered. Part underbuilt in painted brick and brick additions.
Home of Dr Rhudde, grandfather of Maria Bicknell (Wife of John Constable)

Maria Bicknell was daughter of the Solicitor to the Admiralty, her grandfather rector of East Bergholt and where Constable and Maria first met in 1800 when she was just 12 years old and Constable in his early 20’s. The two fell in love in 1809, but partly because of the rector’s opposition they did not marry until 1816.

The lane from East Bergholt to Flatford and one that Constable must have walked hundreds of times as a boy both on his way to Grammar School in Dedham and also to his father’s mill at Flatford.

William’s parents lived in East Bergholt, though it is quite possible that he never did. A veteran of the Boer War, William rejoined the Army in 1914 and was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme.

Henry served in France, initially in one of the Royal Fusiliers Labour Battalions and later in the Labour Corps.  He died on his way to a Base Hospital in Normandy.

Old Hall ran a number of ‘Albion’ Fairs between 1979-1982

Albion was the general name for a series of fairs that ran throughout East Anglia from 1978 to 1982.

Theses fairs began with the Barsham Medieval Faire in 1972 and developed into a significant feature of rural East Anglia, based on a recreation of a medieval craft fair which would include music, theatre and circus act along with traditional craft stalls.

Old Hall ran these for 4 years in succession on the August bank holiday weekend.

A country road with trees and figures

This was a two sided piece for Constable, on the front of the canvas is a country road, that of Flatford Lane with three figures and trees, and on the reverse of the piece a house sits next to the water, that of Willy Lott.

Died in the Great War

Having emigrated to Australia before the War, Walter volunteered to join the Australian Imperial Force in 1916.  He served on the Western Front and was killed in Polygon Wood during the Third Battle of Ypres.

37. Victory Hall
Built post WW1 for East Bergholt United Services club.

The building, a corrugated iron construction, painted green and from 1817 was the base of the village fair, held on the field which is we know today as Willet’s Pond.

Joseph served with the Essex Regiment, initially on the Western Front and later, in Egypt and then Palestine.  He survived combat only to fall victim to an even bigger killer in that Theatre – Disease.

38. The Box Iron
Triangle strip of land at Gastons End, a medieval hamlet of the village.

Originally a medieval satellite hamlet of the village, Gaston’s End is an historic settlement with the pattern of the triangular green known as the ‘BOX IRON’, bordered by Heath Road, Quintons Road and Woodgates Road

Died in the Great War

Having emigrated to Canada before the War, Stanley joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force and served for nearly a year on the Western Front.  Stanley was the first of the Great War casualties to be buried in East Bergholt Cemetery.

1950's unity hut, north side of Hadleigh Road

The Unity hut, on the site of the Red House, north side of Hadleigh Road.

Built in the 1950's as a youth centre for children in the village, and in use until the 1970's until the land was sold off for housing development.
